2007 marked the 75th Anniversary of the Davenport Jaycees and to celebrate this momentous occasion we held many events and special projects.  You will find links below to the pictures from these events.
Many thanks to everyone who helped make the 75th Anniversary special including all of the current Jaycees as well as Past Presidents Rich Craddick and Mike Kerckhove.

A QUICK HISTORY OF THE DAVENPORT JAYCEES
 
Charter est. 1932 by U.S. Charter June 1936 assigned state chapter #012

1935 – Apr. 1935 – Won bid to host 8th Annual State Convention.

1936 – Apr. 18-19 Hosted 8th annual State Convention with over 500 delegates registered. Kenneth Goodrich of Boone elected state president. The entertainment consisted of a trip over the suspended bridge; a ride on the Steamer Ellen through the Davenport roller dam, and also a tour of the Rock Island Arsenal.

1936-37 State: Charles Rueffel serving as State Vice President

1940 – Vice President Arne Tagge, Secretary Leo Hilbner and Treasurer Morgan Sanford. Elections held 1st Meeting in January. Annual projects include Tin Can Derby, Sunshine Camp for undernourished boys, Jaycee Santa Claus and Boys State. Meetings held on alternate Monday nights at Chamber of Commerce Building.

1943 – Accomplishments in 1943 included: Spring membership chairman Bud Parmelee netted 50 members and Fall membership chairman Gil Resser 35 members. March of Dimes project with Ray Groves as chairman raised around $1600. Schwengel for President committee did great – we won. Hosted a Chicago Cubs and Great Lakes ball game with gate receipts of $10,000 and netted a profit of $4,900. Part of the program was the selling of War Bonds and Nile Kinnick Memorial. Cel Herkes chaired the Smokes for the Yanks project with receipts of $3,000. In conjunction with Labor Day, we sponsored a salvage for Victory Parade and Dance and crowning of queen. Also sponsored dedication by Congressman Tom Martin of an Obelisk for service men and women and received recognition in Future Magazine complete with picture. Also the Sunshine Camp Jaycee project was very successful this year.

Jaycee Wives: First organized 1943

1943-44 – State: Fred Schwengel is the 16th President of the Iowa Jaycees. Arno Tagge is serving as State Secretary. Although short-lived Fred came out with the first state newspaper called the Iowa J.C.C. Hawk’s Eye.

1944 – Executive Vice President Reed Cox, Vice President Programs Bud Parmelee, Vice President Meetings Fred Danico, Secretary John Kuehl, Treasurer Don Johnson/Al H. Jacobs and State Director Dr. R.W. Slack. Board Members include Fred Schwengel, Hart, Keller, Bill Kaefferstein, Burgess, Beyers and Anderson. Invoked a rule dropping Board Members who miss three consecutive Board Meetings. Started a youth center project in conjunction with Park Board to combat Juvenile Delinquency. Nov. 4-5 – Attended fall state Board meeting in Cedar Rapids. Those registering included Ed Voss, Al H. Jacobs (Treasurer), John Kuehl, Fred Schwengel, Bill Kafferstein, Ned Curtis, (Dr. R.W. Slack, Roger Emies, Leonard Boldt, John Brune, Dan Danluck and Frank Gantt – Davenport?).

1945 - Jaycees vacillating between a $1.00 dinner and $1.50 deal at meetings. Blackhawk Hotel deal at $1.50 agreed on and now official meeting place. Jim A. Rubley, still in service, joined. Apr. 12 – Sponsoring a Home Talent Show “Spotlight Parade” at Orpheum Theater to raise funds for the Kinnick Memorial Scholarship fund. Chairman for the project is James C. Graham. 2,700 tickets available, with 741 reserved at $1.25 and 1,959 at .75 general admission. A cast of over 150 talented Quad-Cities performers. Special War Service Committee formed with Bob Motto, Lee Johnston, Paul Toudner and Jock Peck appointed to it. Nile Kinnick committee includes J. Harold Sears, chairman and Dick Miller and David Blum. March 29 – guest speaker at meeting Newel C. Day, General Agent for Equitable Life of Iowa.  Apr. – Famed marimba player, Ruth Springborn Zeidler of Muscatine, presented a program at a meeting at the Blackhawk Hotel. April - Jaycees heading up a clothing drive with a slogan “What you can spare, they can wear” with chairman Bob Motto. Collection chairman Ted Bowman headed up a group of men, rotating duty every night in April to pick up clothing. Bob Motto toured every Davenport and Bettendorf school with Lt. Michael D. Webb, vet who had been in every theater of the war in Europe in a plea to the kids to help out. All schools were considered ‘depots’, with awards given to the children bringing in the most clothes. June 7 – Dinner meeting at Blackhawk Hotel with each Jaycee bringing a serviceman to honor. Among those present will be Lieut. Col. Jack Roche, Davenport’s No. 1 flyer and most decorated pilot, who returned from Europe. State Representative Fred Schwengel introduced the servicemen. Following the dinner, a program will be held, after which, the weekly broadcast over WOC from USI headquarters will be shifted to the Blackhawk where Jack Moskowitz will have charge of the strolling microphone. July 5 – Mel Foster, president of Sr. Chamber guest speaker along with Major Robert Laphah, a much decorated air force officer of WW II. Sports chairman Bill Bargman announced a Jaycee Golf handicap tournament to be held at Duck Creek course on Monday, July 23. Nov. 17-18: State Board meeting at Sioux City attended by Fred Schwengel and Dr. R. W. Slack outlined plans for State Convention to be held in Davenport on May 6-11.

      Jaycee Ettes: March meeting at Iowa-Illinois Gas Co. auditorium and Jim Graham briefed them on the Apr. 12 “Spotlight Parade”. The Jaycee Ettes have a skit in the play chaired by Mrs. Arnold Anderson. Herman Ziffen, ticket chairman for the show, got the Jaycee Ettes to man the ticket booth in the show lobby from Apr. 1-12. Also at the meeting a program on “Hair Styles and Make-Up” was given by guest speaker Ruth Ayles and Mrs. Harold Ristow was named chairman of the United Nations War Relief Clothing Drive. June 20 – Picnic at Duck Creek park. Aug. 9 – Special meeting at Iowa-Illinois Gas and Electric Co. auditorium for the proposed charter and by-laws. They were read by Mrs. Harold Rosto and Mrs. Hubie Nelson and were passed by the group. Aug. – approximately 500 attended Jaycettes style revue, “Around the Clock” in the gold room of the Blackhawk Hotel. A neat sum was realized for the Patient’s Fund of the Isolation Hospital and for the wheelchair fund of the Sunshine Club.

1946 – May 6-11: Hosted State Convention at Hotel Blackhawk.

1947 – State Director Robert L. Beyer.

1947-48 – State: Daniel L. Whalen serving as State Chairman OYM Committee.

1948 – State Director James Christensen. USJCC President Paul D. Bagwell was presented with a Victor Triumph 60 movie projector, for use in the new Jaycee War Memorial Building by the Davenport Jaycees in cooperation with the Victor Animatograph Corporation.

1948-49 – State: Les Shick serving as State Chairman Fire Prevention committee. Jack Moskowitz serving as State Chairman DSA-Jaycee Week committee. Dan Whalen serving as State Chairman of Resolutions committee.

1949 – State Director Jack Moskowitz.

1949-50 – State: Daniel A. Whalen serving as National Director.

1951 -  State Director Harold Heath, Secretary John Hart.

1952 – State Director Kenneth E. Herman, Secretary Charles Richardson. May 3, 1952 Hosted State Jaycee Convention and a group of wives meeting in a hospitality room dreamed of forming the Iowa Jaycee auxiliary and directed Joan Smith to investigate and would meet at next Jaycee convention. Nov. 1952 had 133 members.

Jaycettes: May 3, 1952 at Cedar Rapids Joan Smith elected first President of the Iowa Jaycettes for 53-54 and Pat Herman corresponding Secretary.

1952-53 – State: Henry Hartz serving as State Vice President.

1953-54 – State: Jaycettes: Joan Smith resigned as State President and new elections held Nov. 21, 1953.

1954-55 – State Director Dr. Robert S. Easterbrook, Secretary Ben Matthews, Vice Presidents Dave Maehr, Charles Richardson and Burl A. Parks and Treasurer Leo F. Lorence. Members of the Board of Directors included Louard C. Robertson, Don L. Reed, Wayne Ross, Everette Squire and Edward N. Wehr. Paul W. Knowles serving as State Vice President (54-55). Oct. 22-24: Hosted Fall all-state for Iowa, Illinois and Wisconsin plus the 9th annual 8 state institute meeting with nearly 1,000 Jaycees and guests registered. Dr. B.J. Palmer, president of Palmer Chiropractic was guest speaker. Daniel Whalen was general chairman and assisted by Dr. Robert S. Easterbrook, co-coordinator; Charles Flynn, Publicity; Ben Matthews, Finance; Dave Maehr, Forums; Henry Hartz, Reception and Guests; Burl A. Parks and Bob Lay, Arrangements; Tom Cleveland, State Board Meeting; Everette Squire, Max Paulsen and Jack Zoeckler, Reservations and Registrations and Jean Richardson was Ladies Chairman. Special Guests included National President E. LaMar Buckner and NVP’s Hugh McKinna and Howard E. Norris. Jan. 23 – Attended district meeting at Iowa City. Feb. 22 – Completed Tipton extension. Apr. 26 – Tipton charter night banquet: Tom Cleveland presented a president’s pin and gavel to president Dale Phelps.

Jaycettes: Davenport Jaycettes present gavel to Doris Christensen of Clinton newly elected Jaycette President. Later, decide not to affiliate with State organization.

1956-57 – Secretary Harold Lounsberry, State Director Dave Maehr. Jack Zoeckler serving as State Chairman - Sports activities committee. Apr. 30 - Extended Bettendorf with 20 members. Dave Maehr served as extension chairman. Meetings held on 1st & 3rd Thursday. Ended year with 208 members.

1957-58 – Feb. 23 – State DSA/OYF Banquet at Charles City: William P. Flenker OYF nominee. Year ended with 240 members.

1958-59 – Sec. Charles Vander Linden/Tom Olin, State Director Jim Welch. William Wilcox serving as State Vice President. John W. Parish serving as State Vice President. June 24-25 - State Junior Golf at Burlington 7th - Dave Gross. Meetings held on 1st & 3rd Thursday. Ended year with 210 members.

1959-60 – Secretary Richard Simmons, State Director Gene Sindt. Davenport joined with four other clubs to firm the Quint City council to establish a closer relationship between clubs. The local has been approached to assuming the responsibility of a Boy Scout Troop. Davenport is laying the groundwork to win the bid for the 1962 state convention. Meetings held on 1st & 3rd Thursday. Ended year with 182 members.

1960-61 – Secretary Jack F. Broderick, State Director Charles O’Connell. Meetings held on 1st & 3rd Thursday at Blackhawk Hotel. Ended year with 164 members.

1961-62 – Secretary Norman King, State Director Robert Beggs. May – attended State Convention at Waterloo and won bid to host 1963 convention. Meetings held on 1st & 3rd Thursday at Hotel Blackhawk. Year ended with 141 members.

1962-63 - Secretary Thomas Britt; State Director David Fort. Charles O'Connell serving as District F State Vice President. Meetings held 1st & 3rd Thursday at Saddle Club. Apr. 26-28 - hosted 1963 State Convention - 482 men 149 women registered - 756 meals served at banquet. Year ended with 151 members. 

1963-64 - Secretary Paul Johnson; State Director Norman King. Larry Shipley serving as Region V National Director (transferred from Burlington). Charles O'Connell serving as State International Coordinator. Meetings held at Little’s Grove in summer and Saddle Club Barn on 1st & 3rd Thursday. Ended year with 212 members.

1964-65 – Secretary Donald Fala, State Director Ken Light. Bob Dodds serving as President of State Local Presidents Association. Warren Moses serving as State Vice President District L. Al Glotfelty serving as State Legal Counsel. Aug. 6-7 - several Jaycees travel by boat to Fort Madison to attend Summer State Board meeting with a lot of "gas" stops along way. Oct. - Extended Durant - Team members Larry Shipley, Norm King and Bob Dodds. May – Charles O’Connell presented JCI Senatorship #04920. Meetings held on 1st & 3rd Thursday at Littles Grove. Year ended with 156 members.

1965-66 - Secretary Rod Kirman; State Director John Paulson. Dave Herrington serving as State Mental Health and Retardation chairman. Nov. – Dave Herrington serving as honorary Scott County Chairman for Retarded Citizen’s Month. Nov. – Jaycees cooperating with county probation office with members serving as volunteer counselors during probation period for teens and will act as counselors for fatherless boys. Initiated a “Hospitality Night” for a Kansas couple traveling though Davenport. Dec. – Santa toy delivery project and Christmas tree sales. Jan. 18 – National Jaycee President Jim Skidmore was special guest speaker at Jaycee Week meeting. Jan. 20 – Bosses night banquet with Mr. E.D. Mairs, vice president personnel and industrial relations ALCOA, as guest speaker. Independence Hall Essay contest is being conducted in the 6th and 7th grades of our schools. Mar. 6 - Loren W. Stouffer OYE and John O'Donnell DSA are nominees to State OYI/OYF Banquet. Mar. 8 – Workshop with O’Connell and State R&R Chairman Bill Brown (Iowa City) for local project chairman training. Mar. – sending foreign exchange students to Des Moines for annual Foreign exchange student weekend. Ken Light threw his hat into State VP race. Apr. 29-May 1 – State Convention at Sioux City: Won Sweepstakes award and 1st Place Pop. Div. IV for International Relations. Also won 1st in Interclub Relations, Chapter Development and Civic Improvement and 2nd place in Youth and Sports and Public Relations in Pop. Div. IV. President Herrington presented Norm King Memorial Trophy to Bob White of Des Moines, who accepted on behalf of Dick Bright who led 46 visitation teams and completed 2 extensions. Meetings held 1st & 3rd Thursday at Little's Grove in Summer-Elks Club Winter. Year ended with 110 members.

1966-67 – Secretary Burdette Hagen, State Director Larry Shipley. Ken Light is serving as State Vice President Region V. July 13 hosted Miss Iowa Pageant; Helped city do a dead tree survey; Sponsored a Derby Race. Fall projects: Halloween party, examining early warning system for trucks which will not clear bridges and Jaycee Santa for over 1,000 children. Mar. 5 - DSA Nominee Michael P. Underwood, OYE Jack Hudson, OYRL Ronald Gunderson. Apr. 9 – Bob Dodds was one of three Spark-Plug winners at Washington Regional. May 5-7 - Hosted State Convention. Bob Dodds was one of three state winners in Spark-Plug and will represent Iowa at National Convention. Dr. David D. Palmer presented JCI Senatorship #07432. Charles O’Connell was chairman for the convention. Meetings held on 1st & 3rd Thursday at Little’s Grove. Blue Chip award Chapter. Year ended with 201 members.

1967-68 - Secretary Bob Hogan; State Director Bud Hagen. Gene Van Driel serving as Region V National Director. Larry Shipley elected President of Quint City Council. Larry Shipley serving as On-To-Toronto World Congress meeting. Larry Shipley presented JCI Senatorship #08491. Meetings held 1st & 3rd Thursday at Holiday Inn. Ended year with 228 members and 8 associates.

1968-69 – Secretary Wayne Punk, State Director Charles Stark. Lanny Heater serving as Region V State Vice President. Meetings held on 1st & 3rd Thursday at Jaycee Headquarters. Blue Chip award year. Ended year with 251 members.

1969-70 – Secretary James Bush, State Director Larry Shipley. Robert E. Wolf serving as State Chaplain. Meetings held on 1st & 3rd Thursday at Davenport Club. Ended year with 220 members.

1970-71 – State Director Realff Ottesen. Dan Shafland serving as Region V State Vice President. Meetings held on 1st & 3rd Thursday at Davenport Club. Ended year with 218 members.

1971-72 - State Director David Simon. Feb. 72 (or May?) – Charles Stark presented JCI Senatorship #14285. May 5-7 - Hosted 44th State Convention at Blackhawk Hotel over 1,000 Jaycees and wives present as Bill Schult of Waverly won the Presidency over Bert Frantz of Iowa City. Meetings held 1st & 3rd Thursday at Davenport Club.

1972-73 - State Director Jack Storm; Secretary Dave Payne; Treasurer Mike Friedel; Chapter Management V.P. Chuck Easton; External V.P. Ed Hamerlinck; Internal V.P. Roy Goettig; Chaplain Father Bob Spiegel; Legal Council Mike Noyes; Directors Don Christensen, Dick Ellsworth, Joe Gogolich, Doil Haney, John Campbell and Mark Griswold. Ron Ballard joined. Meetings held 1st & 3rd Thursday at Chamber.

1973-74 - State Director Don Christensen, Directors Ron Ballard and Ron Leiby. Extended Walcott. May – Ron Ballard named outstanding 1st Year Jaycee. Meetings held 1st & 3rd Thursday at Chamber.

1974-75 – State Director Doil Haney/Russell Elliott, Internal Vice President Ron Leiby. Dave Payne serving as Region V Parade of Chapters Chairman. Robert E. Wolfe presented JCI Senatorship #17500. Aug. 10 - Hosted Region V Softball Tournament. May – Ron Leiby named outstanding Vice President for Year. Meetings held on 1st & 3rd Thursday at Emist Park in summer and Chamber of Commerce Building.

Jaycee Ettes: Sept. 14 Re-chartered with state organization and charter presented.

1975-76 - State Director Jack Arnold, Director Ron Ballard. David Payne serving as State Vice President Region V. Jan. 22 - Bosses Night and Awards Banquet- Gene Moore, Jaycee of the Year, Mick Carstens Brownfield winner, Chuck Bauer Keyman winner and Tom Peppers and Harvey Mayhill named chairmen of the year. Meetings held 1st & 3rd Thursday at Chamber office.

      Jaycee Ettes: Dropped state affiliation after one year.

1976-77 - State Director Bill Ruddy, Vice President Ron Ballard. Ron Ballard is editor of “The Latest”. Robert H. Mickelsen presented USJCC Ambassador award #00159 [R1] [R1]and Jack Storm presented USJCC Ambassador award #00160. Dr. David D. Palmer presented USJCC Ambassador Award #00184. Meetings held 1st &3rd Thursday at Chamber office, 404 Main.

1977-78 - State Director Jim May; Treasurer Mick Carstens; Internal V.P. Harvey Mayhill; Chapter Management V.P. Jack Arnold; External V.P. Dave Heniff; Secretary Rich Craddick ; Directors Larry Sheets, Donald Bryant, Ron Ballard. Ron Ballard is editor of “The Latest”. Dave Payne serving as State Speak-up Chairman. Nov. – David Payne presented JCI Senatorship #24578. Jan. – Bill Ruddy presented JCI Senatorship #26723. Feb 1978 - ranked 18th in Nation Pop. Div. VI POC. Mar. 1978 - In Chapter 22 new. Ron R. Borden presented USJCC Ambassador Award #0522. Edward W. Hamerlinck presented USJCC Ambassador Award #0523. Meetings held 1st&3rd Thursday at Chamber. Year ended with 97 members.

Jaycee Ettes: Reaffiliated with state after being re-extended by Bettendorf with 10 charter members.

1978-79 – State Director Iven Brush. Bill Ruddy serving as Region L District Director. May – Ron Ballard named Keyman of Year. Harvey Mayhill presented USJCC Ambassador Award #0802. Meetings held on 1st & 3rd Thursday at Chamber Building.

      Jaycee Ettes: Mary Ruddy serving as State Treasurer.

1979-80 - State Director Mike Kerckhove. Mike Kerckhove is serving as State Diplomat. Jan 12 - Hosted Region L Regional.

      Jaycee Ettes: Mary Ruddy serving as Region L District Director. Annual dues $5.00. Meetings held on 3rd Tuesday.

1980-81 - State Director Ron Burke. Ron Ballard serving as Region L District Director. Meetings held 1st & 3rd Thursday at Chamber of Commerce.

      Jaycee Ettes: State Director Rhonda Tegner. Meetings held on 3rd Tuesday

      Senate: Bill Ruddy serving as State Treasurer

1981-82 – State Director Chuck Johann. Ron Ballard serving as Editor Iowa Action. May 15, 1982 - Ron Ballard awarded JCI Senatorship #33014. State Convention: #25 in Keys to Success. Meetings held on 1st & 3rd Thursday at Chamber of Commerce.

      Jaycee Ettes: State Director Kris Johann. Meetings held on 3rd Tuesday

1982-83 – State Director Bob Hanssen. Ron Ballard serving as State Pollard Chairman. Bob Hanssen serving as State President of SDA. Jim Tegner presented JCI Senatorship #38183. Jan. - Richard C. Craddick presented USJCC Ambassador Award #01290.

Jaycee Ettes: State Director Sue Carpenter. Meetings held on 3rd Tuesday at Italian Village Restaurant.

1983-84 – State Director Michael Lotspeich. Mike Kerckhove serving as Region L District Director. Bob Hanssen serving last 8 months as Region L District Director. Ron Burke presented Iowa Jaycee Governor award #052. Meetings held on 1st & 3rd Thursday.

      Jaycee Women: State Director Sally Kimbel. Kathy Long serving as State Chairman Public Relations. Meetings held on 3rd Tuesday at NCO Club.

1984-85 – State Director (none listed). Bob Hanssen serving as District Director Region L. Bob Hanssen serving as Region Director Region L after Jim Burr resigned. Gene Moore presented USJCC Ambassador Award #01489. Joseph W. Gogulich presented USJCC Ambassador Award #01490. Meetings held on 1 st & 3rd Thursday.

      Jaycee Women: State Director Lara Hartman. Meetings held on 3rd Tuesday at Friend’s Church.

1985-86 – State Director Robert Hanssen. Meetings held on Thursday at Turner Hall.

1986-87 – State Director Sally Kimbel and Bruce Hunter Individual Development Vice President. Nov. 15 – Rich Craddick presented JCI Senatorship #40585. Bill Doll presented Iowa Jaycee Governor award #106. Jan. 22 – Bruce Hunter presented USJCC Ambassador Award #02013. May 16 – Eric Schneider won 1st Runner-up in both Pollard and Write-up competition at State Convention. Jim Elias won 2nd Runner-Up in Speak-Up. Bruce Hunter named on of top 40 Jaycees in Iowa. Meetings held on 1st & 3rd Thursday at Turner Hall. Ended year with 104 members.

1987-88 - State Director Eric Schneider and Treasurer Steve Greim. Jim Elias is serving as State Chairman Metro Conference.  Robert Hanssen is serving as Region V District Director. Rich Craddick is serving as Region V and State Local Presidents advisor. Robert Hanssen is serving as Region V State Directors advisor. Sally Kimbel is serving as Region V newsletter editor Fifth Dimension. Apr. 16 - 1988 hosted Region V Spring Regional at Turner Hall. Meetings held 1st & 3rd Thursday at 605 Brady.

      Senate: Mike Kerckhove serving as Quadrant IV Vice President.

1988-89 - State Director Ron Ballard, Treasurer Bob Holliday. Mike Kerckhove serving as State Presidential advisor. Sally Kimbel serving as State Executive Vice President. Eric Schneider serving as State St. Jude's Program Manager. Rich Craddick serving as State OYI/OYF program manager. Cindy Clark serving as State Training Program Manager. Barb Eriksen Ballard serving as State National ACT team coordinator. Feb. 14, 1989 - Fred Schwengel awarded JCI Senatorship #44094.

1989-90 - State Director Eric Schneider, Individual Dev. V.P. Dean Dilley. Cindy Clark serving as State events chairman. Feb. 9 – Bill Doll presented JCI Senatorship #45874. Sally Kimbel presented JCI Senatorship #45934. Meetings held 1st & 3rd Thursday at 529 N. Main Street.

      Senate: Ron Ballard serving as Quadrant IV Vice President.

1990-91 – State Director Andrew Mudd, Ind. Dev. V.P. Dean Dilley. Bob Holliday serving as Region V District Director. Meetings held on 1st & 3rd Thursday at 529 N. Main.

1991-92 – State Director Wade Jorgenson, Management V.P. Dean Dilley. Wade Jorgenson serving as State Program Manager – Vending Outreach. Cindy Clark serving as State Presidential assistant.
